What types of proteins are there?
Protein powders may include whey protein, casein, egg protein, soy protein, or a combination of sources. Whey protein is the most widely used and is available in various formulas, including whey protein concentrate, protein isolate, and whey hydrolysate, among others.
-
Milk protein: Most of the protein shakes you find in any store will be this type.
- Whey Protein or Whey: its most notable characteristic is its high absorption rate, making these products ideal for consumption after training. They may be whey concentrates, hydrolysates, or isolates, providing a higher amount of protein per 100 g of product and better bioavailability.
- Micellar Casein: it is a low-lactose, slow-absorbing protein that protects muscle for longer and increases the feeling of satiety. It is usually taken during periods when there will not be a continuous protein intake.
- Egg protein is considered the gold standard for proteins and can be combined with other proteins to increase protein intake without adding cholesterol.
- Plant-based/soy protein is preferred by vegetarians and is commonly hydrolyzed, meaning it contains no carbohydrates, fats, or fiber.

What are proteins used for?
A high-protein diet stimulates muscle mass growth, increases strength and energy during training, supports health, and provides other benefits, such as improving the health of the skin, hair, and nails.
Proteins are macromolecules formed by linking several types of amino acids. Some are naturally produced by our bodies (non-essential amino acids), while others are obtained exogenously through our everyday diet (essential amino acids).
We can think of them as the building material of our body; our organism uses them to build muscle tissue, among other things. Proteins should be consumed daily according to our needs, which also depend on the amount of physical exercise we do and our goal, since if we want to increase muscle mass, it is necessary to consume approximately 2 grams of protein per kilogram of the athlete's body weight daily. This need for protein, combined with the limited free time we have, makes it necessary to consume sports supplements that help us achieve the required protein levels.
The main functions of proteins are: being essential for growth; providing the amino acids necessary for the proper functioning of the body; transporting oxygen; and defending against infections. Proteins are mainly found in foods of animal origin, such as meat, eggs, and milk.
Frequently asked questions about protein consumption
When is it recommended to take protein shakes?
Protein shakes can be taken at different times of the day depending on your goal. The most common time is right after training, since the body is more receptive to absorbing nutrients and needs protein to repair and build muscle tissue. They can also be taken at breakfast, between meals, or before bed, especially when using a slow-absorbing protein such as casein. The important thing is that it helps you meet your daily protein needs.
How much protein should I take?
The ideal amount depends on your weight, level of physical activity, and goal. To maintain muscle mass, between 1.2 and 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight is recommended. If your goal is to gain muscle mass or you are in an intense cutting phase, this amount may increase to 2 grams per kilogram or even more. Remember that not all of it needs to come from a shake: ideally, supplement a balanced diet to reach the total amount you need each day.
What characteristics should I look for when choosing high-quality protein?
A good protein should have a clear nutritional profile, with a high percentage of protein per serving and a low sugar and fat content. It should also dissolve well, taste pleasant, and come from reliable sources. If it has certifications such as Creapure, Grass Fed, or Informed Choice, even better. At MASmusculo, we back brands that meet these standards because we know that quality shows in the results.
