Importance of a Healthy Diet

Before delving into its importance, we will define a healthy diet so that we can understand what we are talking about. When we eat healthily, we provide our bodies with the essential nutrients they need to perform the multitude of functions assigned to them. Disease prevention is also an intrinsic part of what we call a healthy diet. In other words, it means eating in a way that promotes good health.

The benefits of a healthy diet are as vast as the number of nutrients we incorporate into our bodies every day, since each one has specific functions. Nevertheless, we can summarize them as follows:

  • protection of the cardiovascular system
  • we feel energetic
  • fatigue and unexplained tiredness are eliminated
  • stress is reduced
  • the digestive system improves
  • bones are strengthened
  • the skin looks younger
  • the hair shines
  • intellectual function improves

The benefits of a healthy diet have a positive effect on cognitive function, helping us think better, be more creative, and solve problems more efficiently. In addition, our bodies will be clean and purified from within, giving us a high likelihood of maintaining good health. Did you know that even genetic factors that make us prone to disease can be reduced and neutralized thanks to a healthy diet?

Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Diet

Each population group has specific recommendations for a healthy diet; the needs of children, adults, older adults, and the requirements for an appropriate healthy diet for adolescents are not the same. In addition, creating a list of healthy foods would be too cumbersome and impractical, so we will provide general recommendations that apply to everyone:

  • Drink 2 liters of water a day
  • Avoid soft drinks
  • No artificial sweeteners
  • Consume 60%–70% fruits and vegetables every day
  • Choose lean meats
  • Eat nuts
  • Eat every 2 or 3 hours, but choose foods containing fewer than 300 calories
  • No alcohol
  • Eat a light dinner
