What is Taurine?
Taurine is a natural amino acid that contains sulfur. It is especially concentrated in the brain, eyes, heart, and muscles.
Although amino acids are often called the building blocks of proteins, taurine is not used to build proteins in the muscles. Instead, it is considered a conditionally essential amino acid, meaning that it becomes essential under stressful conditions.
What is it used for?
Taurine, after glutamine, is the amino acid found in the greatest abundance in muscle tissue. In addition, it is found in all the body's tissues and is involved in metabolism and growth. It belongs to the group of semi-essential amino acids, since going without it for long periods can cause significant biological changes. Furthermore, the amount present in food is not sufficient, so the body must synthesize it.
It is common to see energy drinks or sports supplements packed with taurine. In sports supplements, it is used to improve athletic performance because of its ability to improve muscle contraction and delay muscle fatigue; taurine benefits athletic performance.
A review of 19 studies published in 2021 by Jennifer A. Kurtz, A. VanDusseldorp, J. Andrew Doyle, and Jeffrey S. Otis under the title Taurine in sports and exercise observed several benefits, including:
Benefits of Taurine for Athletic Performance
- Increased oxygen uptake by the body
- Increased time to fatigue
- Reduced muscle damage
- Improved recovery times
- Improved strength and power
On the other hand, taurine provides benefits to the entire body, such as strengthening the heart muscle, preventing arrhythmias and vision problems, helping eliminate toxins, and aiding fat digestion by contributing to bile formation, among many other benefits.
Taurine is extremely important for athletes because, first of all, it helps improve athletic performance by contributing to the transmission of nerve impulses, allowing them to travel faster and with greater quality. This results in a better ability of the muscles to respond to the stimulus provided by exercise.
On the other hand, it protects the muscles when they are working at high intensity. As mentioned, it detoxifies the body, thereby promoting muscle regeneration and helping anaerobic-work waste products be eliminated more easily.
Its protective effect on the immune system makes us more resistant to viruses and bacteria, meaning that we do not have to abandon our training because of illness. Finally, it reduces blood pressure and acts as an antioxidant.
Why buy Taurine?
Taurine is present in food, but it does not usually reach the amount provided by supplements. Therefore, the body needs to synthesize it. To spare the body this work and benefit from its properties, taurine supplements are available.
By contributing to nitric oxide production, it increases blood flow to the muscle, thereby ensuring greater strength and endurance and, consequently, the hypertrophy sought when training for these purposes.
How much Taurine should be taken per day?
The most common dosage range is 500–3000 mg per day; however, a 2012 EFSA report suggests that up to 6000g per day is safe.
The easiest and most economical way to reach this dosage is through powdered or capsule supplements. Most capsule supplements contain between 500 and 1000 mg per serving, while powdered taurine may contain between 1000 and 2000 mg per serving.
What forms is Taurine sold in?
- Powdered taurine mixed with water has a slightly bitter taste, so it may be advisable to mix it with natural flavorings or other beverages until the desired dosage is reached.
- However, taurine capsules are usually more convenient but less versatile.
- Mixed as another ingredient in energy supplements.
