What types of proteins are there?
Protein powders can include whey protein, casein, egg protein, soy protein, or a combination of sources. Whey protein is the most used and is available in various formulas including whey protein concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate, among others.
-
Milk Protein: Most protein shakes you find in any store will be of this type.
- Whey Protein or Whey: its most notable feature is its high absorption rate, making it ideal to take after training. These can be concentrates, hydrolysates, or whey isolate, which provide a higher amount of protein per 100g of product and better bioavailability.
- Micellar Casein: a low-lactose, slow-absorbing protein that protects muscles for longer and increases the feeling of fullness; it is usually taken during periods when protein intake will not be continuous.
- Egg protein is considered the gold standard for proteins and can be combined with other proteins to increase protein intake without adding cholesterol.
- Plant-based/soy protein is preferred by vegetarians and is commonly hydrolyzed, meaning it does not provide carbohydrates, fats, or fiber.

What are proteins for?
A high-protein diet stimulates muscle mass growth, increases strength and energy during training, strengthens health, and provides other benefits, such as improving the health of skin, hair, and nails.
Proteins are macromolecules formed by the union of various types of amino acids, some produced naturally by our body (non-essential amino acids) and others ingested externally through our daily diet (essential amino acids).
We can think of them as the building material of our body; they are used by our organism to build muscle tissues among others. Proteins must be consumed daily according to our needs and also depend on the amount of physical exercise we do and the goal we have, since if we want to increase muscle mass, it is necessary to consume approximately 2 grams of protein per kilogram of the athlete's weight daily. This protein requirement and the limited free time we have make it necessary to consume sports supplements that help achieve the necessary protein levels.
The main functions of proteins are: to be essential for growth; to provide the amino acids necessary for the body’s proper functioning; to act as oxygen transport; to defend against infections. Proteins are mostly found in animal-based foods such as meat, eggs, and milk.
Frequently asked questions about protein consumption
When is it recommended to take protein shakes?
Protein shakes can be taken at different times of the day depending on your goal. The most common time is right after training, as the body is more receptive to absorbing nutrients and needs protein to repair and build muscle tissue. They can also be taken as breakfast, between meals, or before bed, especially if it’s a slow-absorbing protein like casein. The important thing is that it helps you meet your daily protein needs.
How much protein should I take?
The ideal amount depends on your weight, physical activity level, and goal. To maintain muscle mass, it is recommended to consume between 1.2 and 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. If your goal is to gain muscle mass or you are in an intense cutting phase, that amount can increase to 2 grams per kilogram or even more. Remember that not all protein should come from shakes: ideally, you complement a balanced diet to reach your total daily protein needs.
What features should I look for when choosing high-quality proteins?
A good protein should have a clear nutritional profile, with a high percentage of protein per serving and low sugar and fat content. It’s also important that it has good solubility, a pleasant taste, and comes from reliable sources. If it has certifications like Creapure, Grass Fed, or Informed Choice, even better. At MASmusculo, we support brands that meet these standards because we know quality shows in the results.
