Recapitulando, simetría corporal

To recap, body symmetry

You exercise a lot at the gym, and as a bodybuilder, you naturally want to build your body harmoniously—what about body symmetry?

Returning to the topic, this is an almost impossible task to achieve, since you will never find an individual on this planet who has achieved complete symmetry.

This is because each individual has different strengths and weaknesses—that is, lagging or underdeveloped muscles in terms of muscular harmony and uniformity.

For example, if you have less than 2.5 cm of difference in arm circumference from one arm to the other, it probably will not even be noticeable, but beyond that, you will want to work specifically to try to correct this asymmetry.

Asymmetry is quite common and often affects the chest and arms, because most people have one side that is stronger or more developed than the other.

Strength training will help you reduce these differences over time.

But keep in mind that you should not obsess over this minor imbalance, which in many cases only you notice. Besides, nobody is perfectly symmetrical when you look closely; nobody achieves total symmetry, nobody.

Rethinking symmetry

Body symmetry is difficult to achieve, and it often takes many years of weight training to restore balance between the right and left sides.

The chest muscles frequently reveal an obvious asymmetry, which you can also see in the arms and legs.

  • For example, for right-handed people, the right arm is generally stronger, so it pulls on the shoulder, chest, and back muscles on that same side, making them larger.
  • In the lower body, the left leg will be stronger, since it is the supporting leg used to take off when jumping.

How to overcome this asymmetry

If you want to overcome a lack of muscular symmetry, you will probably hear these tips for training lagging muscles:

  • Use different weights.
  • Do more sets with the weaker side.
  • Use dumbbells.
  • Use machines.

In addition to these tips, there are certain recommendations to help you effectively correct your body's asymmetries:

  1. Do not fall into the temptation of doing more with each workout (repetitions or weight) for the lagging biceps, because the latter is not only less developed but, in 90% of cases, is also weaker, which will lead you directly to overtraining.
  2. IMPORTANT: work unilaterally, improving your neuromuscular connections.
  3. If you follow a PULL / PUSH / LEG routine, we recommend separating your training and working your biceps in isolation at the beginning of the session to achieve and maintain maximum concentration.
  4. Add a few sets (3 / 4) of unilateral cable curls in a light / high-repetition set at the end of your biceps session, simply so that the lagging biceps can improve the nerve impulse and sensation in this area.
  5. Smartly alternate 1 to 2 very short “express sessions” of 5 sets, again unilaterally, (dumbbell or cable) for the weaker arm.

In the case of any lagging leg or other body muscle, you can take a look at this video, prepared by our team.

Now you know: nobody has a perfectly symmetrical body, so you should not obsess over symmetry. Follow our advice and work hard… that is what is best for you…
