A motivational quote with Jay Cutler
Jay Cutler, a four-time Mr. Olympia winner and successful businessman, is the founder of Cutler Nutrition, his own company that helps people achieve the best in high-performance sports nutrition.
Like everyone who loves this sport, Jay Cutler is passionate about bodybuilding and, as such, his goal is to make a greater impact by helping and educating others.
Jay Cutler, between two fields
Cutler began working in his family’s concrete construction business, Cutler Bros Concrete, at the age of 11, and began training. When he was 18, he graduated from high school.
He then graduated from Quinsigamond Community College in 1993 with a degree in criminal justice, intending to work as a corrections officer in a maximum-security prison, but he was inspired to enter bodybuilding after meeting personal trainer Marcos Rodríguez.
After working hard and focusing on becoming the best at the regional and then national level, he earned his first victory in 1993 at the Iron Bodies Invitational. A year earlier, however, he had placed second in the Worcester Championship.
Great things were definitely ahead of him, and he continued working tirelessly for about 10 years, going on to win consecutive Arnold Classic titles in 2002, 2003, and 2004 and pursuing Ronnie Coleman at the Mr. Olympia until he conquered the competition and became a four-time champion.
In an interview with him, we discovered what bodybuilding and business—two very different fields—have in common, such as the fact that to be a professional bodybuilder and a businessman, you must have a “monstrous” mindset and maintain good relationships with everyone.
Jay Cutler’s advice
In a thoughtful interview, Jay Cutler shares insights into the importance of failure and how he went through a transition, demonstrating how passionate projects can succeed. He also tells us how Sylvester Stallone in Rocky IV inspired him… well, he was one of his inspirations…
- Mind-muscle connection: “you have to have an image in your mind of what you want to achieve, and then begin to see your genetic potential.” Here, you must take training, health, and nutrition into account—things you need to control.
- Bodybuilding requires an uncompromising mindset, as well as hard work and dedication: Jay Cutler decided at the age of 12 that he wanted to sculpt his own body to have a perfect, fit physique; at 18, he began understanding things on his own, experimenting with his trainers.
- Failure is important for mental growth: every time he competed, he told himself that he had already “won,” regardless of the outcome… in the end, you need a winning mindset to compete…
- Staying relevant and active in the community already feels like winning: helping others who want to practice bodybuilding is better than receiving awards; making an impact on others makes him feel better than winning a Mr. Olympia.
Everything seems related to bodybuilding, but just as in sports, business also requires communication and relationships.
When Jay Cutler transitioned to managing his business ventures, he felt that something happened “automatically.”
Consistency, Dedication, and Commitment are his keys, and if you prioritize these three concepts, it is simply a matter of becoming passionate about something and staying on the right path.
Jay Cutler’s transition
How did Jay transition from professional bodybuilding to the business world?… well, in addition to coming from a business-oriented family, he focused on venturing into something he was passionate about and wanted to do much more for the community.
Jay Cutler tells us in the interview that if you choose to do something you want to do, you should not let other people tell you otherwise. In addition, there are qualities every champion should have, and you should know them.
It may take you a long time to see the results you want, but it will be worth it. Ultimately, it is a matter of experimenting without fear of failure, and if no one likes it, you should still be able to continue on your path toward your goals.
